Frequently asked questions

Gif4Mac says it needs Screen Recording permission. How do I enable it?

Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen Recording, and turn on Gif4Mac. macOS may ask you to relaunch the app afterwards. This permission is only used to capture your screen locally — nothing is ever transmitted.

Where are my GIFs saved?

Every export is saved to ~/Documents/Gif4Mac. Your most recent GIFs are also available in the menu-bar popover library.

What is the maximum recording length?

A recording can last up to 60 seconds. Recording stops automatically when the limit is reached.

How do I change the frame rate or the export size?

Open the Settings window from the gear icon in the popover. You can pick the capture frame rate (10, 15, 20 or 30 fps) and the export size (100% or 50%).

How do annotations work?

After recording, you can add text (press ⌥⏎ for a new line in multi-line text), arrows, and blur areas. Each annotation has its own time range, so it only appears during the part of the GIF you choose.

How do I copy a GIF into Slack or another app?

Use “Copy GIF” from the popover library, then paste it directly into Slack, an email, a pull request, or any app that accepts images.

I have several displays. Which one gets recorded?

When you start a capture, simply click on the display you want to record. Gif4Mac supports multiple displays, including Retina screens.

How do I report a bug?

Email support@gif4mac.bdzapps.com with your macOS version and the steps to reproduce the issue. A GIF of the bug (made with Gif4Mac, of course) helps a lot.
